What is an Accent?

Simply, it’s a burst of air that occurs on the accented note. This burst of air does not change the way we articulate. We will not be articulating harder or more aggressively.

Here’s what the air does. The image below shows the Air Stream- the normal amount of air used to play the saxophone. The Burst of Air is where the accent occurs.Lesson 26 Accent Image

An Example Without the Saxophone

This is what the air stream sounds like in relation to the image above. This will be without the saxophone. We will focus on the air-stream and not articulation in this example:

Go ahead and do this 5 times on your own without the saxophone.

An Example With the Saxophone

This is what the air stream sounds like in relation to the image above when playing the saxophone. Once again, focus on the air-stream and not articulation. We will add the articulation later.
