Beginning of the Note
When we articulate the beginning of a staccato note, we articulate with a “tah” articulation (see heading Syllable to Say).
End of the Note
This part of the note defines the staccato. There are 2 different ways to play a staccato. Right now I’ll share with you the different approaches, but at this point play whatever version works for you.
Tongue Cut Off
Sounds best at fast tempos
- Cut off the end of the note with your tongue. Or in other words, stop the reed with your tongue.
- This is easier to execute but lacks the desired sound at slower tempos.
- Here’s an audio example of what the air sounds like with a tongue cut off.
