The Quarter Note:

The black ovals are called note heads. The lines pointing up and down are called stems.

Counting The Quarter Note

  1. Set your metronome to ♩=60
  2. Start the first quarter note (1) on the first click
  3. Start the second quarter note (2) on the second click
  4. Continue this process with note 3 & 4
  5. There are 4 clicks/notes per measure in our example:

Each time the metronome clicks, say 1,2,3,4, looking at the image below:

  1. Identify the name and fingering of the note
  2. Click here if you need assistance with step 1
  3. Set your metronome to ♩=60
  4. Each time the metronome clicks- play a quarter note
  5. There are 4 clicks in the measure, so you’ll play 4 separate quarter notes in this exercise
