Learning By Ear

Before you start playing, know the song well enough so you can sing or hum the melody.

We’ve done this for you in our lessons. But if you learn something off the radio, make sure to break it up into sections. This makes learning easier.

Set a specific amount of time each day to learn the song. Some students set a time of 15 minutes a day, and others spend 2 minutes a day.

Set a time that works for you. We don’t want this to turn into a chore. When you reach your goal for the day, stop and move on. Then do the same thing the next day. Consistency is the key to your success!

Repeat each section at least 5 times (correctly) before you move to the next section.

Once you can play sections 1 and 2, combine these sections (playing them together) before moving to section 3. Continue this process through our the remainder of the song.

If you are having a hard time figuring out a note, simply pause the audio during the challenging note (this allows the trouble note to be the last sound you hear) and then sing/hum the note. Then find it on the saxophone.

Once you have completed the whole song, play the song a few more times before moving on.

Play this song at least 5 times a day for the next few days. This will help you lock the notes into your memory and fingers.

Within a few days to a week, you’ll have a new song added to your repertoire!
