3/4 Time

Up to this point we have been playing in 4/4 time. We will now learn 3/4 time. As a side note, the 3/4 time signature is used for the waltz:

The 3/4 Time Signature:

  • The number on top refers to the number of beats in a measure (3 beats per measure).
  • The number on bottom shows which note gets the beat (The 4 on bottom informs us that the quarter note gets the beat).

In the following examples we will combine both 3/4 time and the dotted half note (among other rhythms).

Example 2:

Example 3:

When in 3/4 time, a dotted half note fills the whole measure with 3 beats.
